Anthony Mackie Latest News: Broadway’s Macbeth Role, Captain America Future and Avengers: Doomsday

Anthony Mackie is Captain America on the big screen — and next spring, he will take on one of the most famous roles in theatre history. From Broadway to the multiverse, here is everything happening with the Marvel star right now.

Back to Broadway as Macbeth

Mackie is returning to the Broadway stage for the first time in 16 years to play the lead in Shakespeare’s Macbeth. The casting, first reported by Deadline on October 5, 2026, will see him star in the New York transfer of director Max Webster’s acclaimed production, which was staged at London’s Donmar Warehouse Theatre in 2023 with David Tennant and Cush Jumbo before moving to the West End’s Harold Pinter Theatre.

The production is known for its striking use of binaural headphone sound, designed by Gareth Fry, which feeds the actors’ microphone audio directly to the audience’s headsets. “You can hear every whisper, you can feel every emotion,” Mackie said.

Rehearsals begin in February 2027, with previews expected in late March or early April and the run continuing through July at a Broadway theatre yet to be announced. Casting for Lady Macbeth and the other principal roles is still underway.

Mackie is no stranger to the stage. He trained at Juilliard School’s Drama Division in New York, graduating in 2001, and his last Broadway appearance was in 2008 in Martin McDonagh’s A Behanding in Spokane alongside Christopher Walken, Sam Rockwell and Zoe Kazan. “I started as a theater kid,” he told Deadline. “Doing theater was my passion since I was seven years old.”

“I’m Still Captain America”

With Chris Evans reportedly returning for Avengers: Doomsday — in theatres December 18, 2026 — Mackie has made one thing clear: he is not handing over the shield. “I’m still Captain America,” he said. “If you look at the comic books, there are comic books where Steve Rogers and Sam Wilson are together fighting as Captain America. They’re both still Captain America. It’s just Steve Rogers comes back because they have a big opponent to battle in Doomsday.”

Mackie has previously said he sees himself carrying the shield for around another decade, covering the next two Avengers films and hopefully another solo outing. His last solo film, Captain America: Brave New World, earned $415 million worldwide. He has teased that Doomsday will push boundaries and end on a major cliffhanger, with Robert Downey Jr.’s Doctor Doom looming large.

Secret Wars and a Tight Schedule

After his Macbeth run wraps in July 2027, Mackie says he will head straight back to “finish up all the Avengers stuff for Secret Wars,” which is scheduled for December 17, 2027 — just five months later. The tight timeline has fueled speculation that the film could slip, though neither Marvel nor Disney has commented on any delay.

Death Hoax Debunked

Fans were briefly alarmed this week when a “R.I.P. Anthony Mackie” Facebook page claiming the actor had died on October 11 attracted nearly a million likes. The report was quickly confirmed as a complete hoax — Mackie is alive and well. It is the latest reminder not to trust viral social media pages without checking reputable news sources.
