Few actors are as universally loved as Tom Hanks. From his early comedy roles to his status as one of the most respected dramatic actors of his generation, Hanks has built a career spanning more than four decades — and he remains as busy as ever. Here is your guide to Tom Hanks latest news, his remarkable career, and what he is working on now.
A Career Like No Other
Tom Hanks first found fame in the 1980s with comedies such as Splash and Big, the latter earning him his first Academy Award nomination. He then won back-to-back Best Actor Oscars for Philadelphia in 1993 and Forrest Gump in 1994 — a feat only a handful of actors have ever achieved. Since then, his filmography has become a roll call of modern classics: Apollo 13, Saving Private Ryan, Cast Away, Toy Story, The Green Mile, and Captain Phillips, to name just a few.
What sets Hanks apart is his range and his reputation. He moves effortlessly between drama, comedy, war films, and voice work as Woody in the Toy Story franchise, and he is famously known as one of the kindest figures in Hollywood — a reputation built over decades of stories from colleagues and fans alike.
Beyond Acting: Writing, Producing, and Directing
Hanks is far more than an actor. He co-created the acclaimed Second World War dramas Band of Brothers and The Pacific, directed the film That Thing You Do!, and has written books including the short story collection Uncommon Type and the novel The Making of Another Major Motion Picture Masterpiece. His production company, Playtone, has been behind numerous films and series, and his interest in history — particularly the Second World War and the space programme — runs through much of his work.
What Is Tom Hanks Working On Now?
Hanks continues to take on a steady stream of film and television projects, balancing prestige dramas with lighter fare and voice work. Recent years have seen him play real-life figures, lend his voice to animated favourites, and appear in streaming releases alongside theatrical films. Fans watching Tom Hanks latest news will also know him as a regular presence at film festivals, literary events, and charity causes, where he remains generous with his time.
He is also active on social media, where his posts about everyday life, vintage typewriters, and his travels regularly delight followers — and occasionally go viral for their warmth and humour.
His Life Away From the Screen
Married to actress Rita Wilson since 1988, Hanks is a father of four and a grandfather. The couple are known for their long, stable marriage — a rarity in Hollywood — and for their shared work in film and music. Hanks is also a passionate collector of vintage typewriters, an amateur historian, and a supporter of veterans’ causes and space exploration education.
In 2020, Hanks and Wilson were among the first high-profile figures to announce they had contracted COVID-19, and his open, calm updates during their recovery were widely praised for helping the public understand the illness in its early days.
Why Tom Hanks Still Matters
In an industry that moves fast, Hanks has endured because audiences trust him. Whether he is playing an ordinary man in extraordinary circumstances or a historical figure, he brings decency and depth that viewers recognise instantly. That trust is why his new projects still make news, why his older films remain endlessly rewatchable, and why “America’s Dad” remains one of the most affectionate nicknames in entertainment.
