Edmond North High Schools students rallied around the student, saying they plan to all have flags and fly them together no matter the type of car they’re driving.
EDMOND, Okla. — State Superintendent Ryan Walters says he will investigate after an Edmond North High School student was told he was not allowed to fly an American flag from his pickup truck.
On Wednesday, Edmond North High School senior Caleb Horst said he was told by school officials that he couldn’t have an American flag flying from his truck. District officials said it’s a practice not to fly any flags on campus, but it’s not a policy.
When school officials informed Horst, a group started organizing to show their “American pride.”
“I’ve never really had problems with it before, and it’s our First Amendment, so it’s kind of hard for them to infringe upon our rights,” Horst said. “In the end, we’re all American, all united under that flag, and there’s not anything anyone can do to separate us.”
Walters chimed in on the incident, posting on the social media platform X that he will investigate.
“Patriotism should never be penalized at Oklahoma schools. Ever. EPS has a history of prioritizing woke agendas over our history and our freedoms. We will investigate and I will act,” Walters posted.

Edmond North High Schools students rallied around Horst on Thursday, and they said they plan to all have flags and fly them together no matter the type of car they’re driving.
“It represents us. It’s unity. It represents us as one, and it’s our freedom,” Edmond North High School student Vance Miller said. “We have people that fight and die for that flag every day, so I think we should be allowed to fly it.”
